Frequently Asked Questions

  • If you don’t have a car, the nearest bus and train stations are in Holland, Michigan and the nearest airport is in Grand Rapids.xt goes here

  • No guests or visitors are permitted on campus except for drop off/pick up and during our Friday Night Open Studios. We work really hard to create a sanctuary for everyone on campus and our no-visitor policy is key to maintaining this environment.

  • Check-in is on the Sunday before your class begins from 2:00–5:00 p.m. Eastern time. We cannot accommodate anyone earlier than Sunday at 2 p.m.

  • Core classes run daily from 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. with an hour break for lunch. Two-week classes meet both Saturday and Sunday of that first week. All studios (except glass) are open 24 hours to work after class hours.

  • We wish you could stay forever, but your last class will be on Friday. If you are staying on campus, you must be out of your room by 10 a.m. the following Saturday. Work study students must stay later on Saturday to finish out their scheduled work hours.

  • Rooms cannot be secured, so it’s better leave them at home.

  • Single rooms are limited and can be requested at the time of registration and are assigned on a first-come-first-served and need basis. Single rooms are not guaranteed (unless required for health reasons) and housing assignments are made 1-2 weeks prior to the week of the class.

  • There are no individual bathrooms and showers. There are several shared bathrooms and showers in our accommodations and a central shower house “The Wet.”

  • Sure! You can see a list of lodging in the area by visiting www.saugatuck.com. We also maintain a list of recommendations that we can provide if you email us at campusoffice@ox-bow.org. If you stay in town, but still want to enjoy Ox-Bow’s tasty food, meal plans are available for purchase when you register or when you check-in for your class.

  • Sorry, but no. Our 115 acres make it tempting to set up camp, but unfortunately, we are unable to let students do so.

  • No, but there is a great laundromat just down the road. The Interurban Shuttle Bus will take you there for just $1 (cash)! Our campus office can hook you up with their number.

  • Sure do! Delicious vegetarian and vegan meals can be requested when you check in for your class on campus. We try our best to accommodate other dietary requirements and will send you a dietary intake form before you head to campus, so we can learn all about your needs. We love to create every single person a delicious meal that fits their specific needs.

  • We have Wi-Fi on campus in our main buildings. We have extended Wi-Fi service across much of campus, but some areas still have spotty or no coverage. Cell service also tends to be limited on campus.

  • In the spring, we will send you a supply list tailored to your class, and it will convey all the required and suggested items to bring with you.

  • We wish! The nearest stores are Michael’s Arts & Crafts and Hobby Lobby located in Holland, Michigan (20-minute drive). A lot of students ship their materials directly to Ox-Bow, no earlier than one week prior to their arrival. We also have a shop right on campus that sells basic art-making materials.

  • Pretty unpredictable. It is recommended that you come prepared for both wet/cold and hot/dry weather. There is no heating or air conditioning, and nights can dip down into the 50s while days can get as high as the 90s. What we can predict is that there will be mosquitoes and other insects aplenty! Be sure to bring your favorite repellent.

  • Sorry, but you’ll have to leave all pets at home. You can get your animal fix by visiting with our chickens, AKA the Ox Flock, while you’re here.
