Ox-Bow: A Place to Pause

Over a Century of Education, Learning, and Experimentation

At Ox-Bow, the fall and winter is both a time of reflection and preparation as our busy summer season recedes and we look forward to the next. As our pace of programming slows, this season offers us a moment to pause and reflect on our mission, our programs and our value.

In 2024, we will be 114 years old – the oldest summer art school in the United States. Remarkably, our core mission hasn’t changed very much. Even with small evolutions in programs and partnerships, we are still a place where artists come for education, experimentation and a magnificent environment. Artists come to Ox-Bow to have their creative practice stimulated by all of these things, but they also come to Ox-Bow to “pause.” In order to reconnect with creative work, artist’s often need to detach from their everyday environment and take a hiatus from daily life in order to find focus, community and inspiration.

With your support, we can continue to provide space for artists to gather, live and learn together. The outcome of that time might seem abstract to some, but the impact of artist residencies and arts education on artists, local communities, civic life and our national cultural ecosystems is tremendous. Art acts as collective memory, builds empathy between people and communities, and is an effective vehicle of social change. To reap these benefits, artists need the time and space to build skills, have uninterrupted work, and interface with their peers and mentors. Ox-Bow is just that place. And we’ve been that place for over a century.

This year we are sharing stories from our community about the impact Ox-Bow has on their life and art practice. We hope you’ll feel inspired and moved by these testimonies, and in them see the significance Ox-Bow has for artists, and by extension – the larger cultural landscape. You can read these stories by signing up for newsletter.

As we wrap up 2023, our goal is to raise $100,000 before the end of year. Together we can reach that goal and we are pleased to share that our board will match a portion of funds raised. Your generosity and thoughtful contributions allow Ox-Bow to continue to provide artists and our community both near and far – a place to pause.

Thank you, for contributing to Ox-Bow’s 2023 Annual Fund. Your gift directly supports our mission, campus life and artists at all stages of their artistic journey.
