Professional Artists in Residence
Two to five week residencies from September 9-October 13, 2006
When Ox-Bow was established in 1910, its founders, Frederick Fursman and Walter Marshall Clute were looking for a way to remove themselves from everyday life. They wanted a place where they could find respite and inspiration, as well as a supportive community of artists to fuel their artmaking. Today, in 2006, Ox-Bow provides the same qualities its founders sought in 1910. The Professional Artist in Residence program (PAR) is designed to offer professional and emerging artists the time, solitude, and focus often unavailable to so many working artists. At Ox-Bow, PARs can enjoy 24-hour access to their studios, and an inspirational setting, free from the expectations of commercial and academic demands.
Painting, Drawing, and Writing PARs will work in the Lutz Studio, Ox-Bow's new group studio building that can accommodate 4-6 artists at a time. PARs working in Print, Ceramics, and Metals will work alongside their fellow PARs in the Print, Ceramics, and Metals studios.
Because Ox-Bow is rooted in a sense of community, we invite all PARs to give a slide lecture to the local community of Saugatuck and Douglas. Additionally, we invite all PARs to either work with the Ox-Bow staff in exhibiting their work in the Ox-Bow gallery, or to participate in a group show held in November at a local gallery space.
Cost: $100 per week (includes room and board and use of studios). PARs must bring their own supplies (inks and paper for Print, clay and glazes for Ceramics, etc). Meals are also included in the cost. When classes are in session, PARs will eat with the student body. Outside of class times, Chef Ferris will supply meals for residents.
