First things first, how do I get to Ox-Bow?

If you don’t have a car, the nearest bus and train station is in Holland, Michigan and the nearest airport is in Grand Rapids. More detailed travel info can be found here.

Can I have a visitor while I’m taking a class?

No guests nor visitors are permitted on campus except for drop off/pick up and during our Friday Night Open Studios. We work really hard to create a sanctuary for everyone on campus and our no visitor policy is key to maintaining this environment.

My class starts on Sunday, but when can I arrive?

Check-in begins that first Sunday or your class between 2 - 5 p.m. We cannot accommodate anyone earlier than Sunday at 2 p.m.

What is the class schedule for the rest of the week?

Your first class will be a brief introduction on Sunday night at 8 p.m. Starting Monday, classes will run formally from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. (glass runs from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.) with an hour break for lunch at 1 p.m. Two-week classes meet both Saturday and Sunday of that first week. All studios (except glass) are open 24 hours to work after class hours.

When do I have to leave Ox-Bow?

We wish you could stay forever, but your last class will be on Friday. If you are staying on campus, you must be out of your room by 10 a.m. the following Saturday. Work study students must stay until Sunday at noon.

Can I bring my valuables to Ox-Bow?

Rooms cannot be secured, so better leave them at home. We do offer lockers if it is a must have item, but you must bring your own combination lock.

What’s the deal with single rooms?

Single rooms are limited and can be requested at the time of registration and are assigned on a first-come, first served and need basis. Single rooms are not guaranteed (unless required for health reasons) and housing assignments are made 1-2 weeks prior to the week of the class. If you would like to check in on your single room request, give campus a call at 269.857.5811, one-two weeks before your course. Since single rooms cannot be guaranteed at the time of registration, they are paid for when you check in on campus ($100/week).

Are there private bathrooms in Ox-Bow provided accommodations?

There are no individual bathrooms and showers. There are several shared bathrooms and showers in our accommodations and a central shower house “The Wet.”

Uh oh, I don’t do shared bathrooms. Can I stay in Saugatuck and commute?

Sure! You can see a list of lodging in the area by visiting www.saugatuck.com or by calling the Saugatuck Visitors Bureau at 269-857-1701 (We also have a list of recommendations here.) If you stay in town, but still want to enjoy Ox-Bow tasty food, meal plans are available for purchase when you check in for your class.

Instead of staying in the Inn, can I camp at Ox-Bow?

Sorry, but no. Our 115 acres are tempting to set up camp, but unfortunately we are unable to let students do so.

Is there a washer and dryer available for use at Ox-Bow?

No, but there is a great laundromat just down the road. The Interurban Bus will take you there for just $1! Our campus office can hook you up with their number.

Do you offer vegetarian and vegan meals or meals for folks with special dietary requirements?

Sure do! Delicious vegetarian and vegan meals can be requested when you check in for your class on campus. We try our best to accommodate other dietary requirements (within reason), but would love it if you gave us a heads up by calling campus at 269.857.5811.

Will there be internet access?

We have wi-fi available in our dining hall for those that bring their own laptops.

What art supplies should I bring with me?

In the spring, we send out supply list and it will have all the required and suggested items to bring with you.

Is there a nearby art supply store?

We wish! The nearest stores are Michael’s Arts & Crafts and Hobby Lobby located in Holland, Michigan (20 minute drive). A lot of students will ship their materials directly to Ox-Bow no earlier than 3 weeks prior to their arrival.

What’s the weather like out there?

Pretty unpredictable. It is recommended that you come prepared for both wet/cold and hot weather. There is no heating or air conditioning and nights can dip down into the 50's and days can get as high as 90. What we can predict, is that there will be mosquitoes! Be sure to bring your favorite repellent.

Can I bring my dog/cat/goat/chicken/etc. to Ox-Bow with me?

Sorry, but you’ll have to leave all pets at home.
