Experience the intensive nature of Ox-Bow in our exciting weekend workshops. Modeled after Ox-Bow’s renowned summer program, these workshops are designed to maximize your studio time by allowing you to work intently for concentrated time periods.

Students arrive on campus on the first night of their class by 6 pm for a group dinner and spend the rest of the evening with their classmates and instructor in orientation. Class begins promptly the next morning after a 9 am breakfast. Students work in the studio each day until 5 pm, after which the group returns to the Inn for a cozy dinner, conversation, and slide lectures. Guests check out Sunday morning after brunch at 1pm.

The weekend workshops begin on various dates and days of the week. Please read the descriptions carefully. Materials are included unless otherwise noted.

with Anne-Marie Oomen
Cost: $200 for tuition, $150 for Room and Board (optional)

This intensive workshop will have aspiring and experienced writers breaking out of the traditional solitary writing process, and taking advantage of Ox-Bow’s community framework. Through the use of prompts, starters, models, and practical guidance, we will engage in the generative writing process, where we will produce new works and through the workshop process explore various ways of offering feedback and revising poems. This workshop is open to all levels of writers, from the beginning writer to the published poet. Together we’ll work on poem narratives in the context of a friendly writing workshop. We’ll end our time together with a reading of new works.

Collage and Mixed Media: Beyond Cut and Paste
Thursday, September 20 through Sunday, September 23
with Rob Bondgren
Cost: $275 for tuition, $225 for Room and Board (optional)

Find ways to use recycled materials, memorabilia, and found objects to create mixed media masterpieces! Focusing on materials and methods of cut and paste, transfer, drawing and painting, and patterning, you will experiment with combining these materials and methods to create narratives. You will be encouraged to incorporate natural materials found at Ox-Bow, while paying special attention to the changing colors, patterns, and textures of the fall landscape. Coursework is supplemented with discussions of contemporary and historical uses of collage, slide lectures, presentations, and group critiques. Beginners and experienced students are welcome. A supply list will be sent upon registration.

Mosaics: Better Homes and Gardens
Thursday, September 20 through Sunday, September 23
with Eric May
Cost: $275 for tuition, $225 for Room and Board (optional), $50 Materials Fee

The advantage of mosaic as an art form is its durability with a wide range of practical applications- art that you can not only live with, but live on! In this course, students will learn the millennia old tradition of mosaic making. Working with Italian marble mosaic and Byzantine glass mosaic, traditional techniques will be explored, providing the basic skills needed to execute each student's individual designs. We will focus on exploring the natural motifs inspired by the beautiful Ox-Bow landscape. The resulting crafted products in this course are meant to be installed in one's home and garden: we will create mosaic panels which can be installed permanently in a countertop, backsplash, or shower as well as garden stepping stones. These intricately designed artworks will add a flourish of beauty to everyday spaces.

The Artist and the Sketchbook
Thursday, September 20 through Sunday, September 23
with Kaye Buchman
Cost: $275 for tuition, $225 for Room and Board (optional)

For an artist, a sketchbook is a prized possession. It holds thoughts, catalogs observations, and serves as a launching pad for bigger works. In this course, we will examine the use of the sketchbook as a tool for visual idea development and technical experimentation. Students explore the traditions of the sketchbook genre through slide lectures, demonstrations, and discussions. We will then develop images in our sketchbooks from the unique and diverse landscape and architecture at Ox-Bow. A supply list will be sent upon registration.
