Jeff Kolar

August 4-10

Jeff Kolar is an independent sound and media artist, composer, and curator. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Radius, an experimental radio broadcast platform established in 2010. His work, described as “speaker-shredding” (Half Letter Press), “wonderfully strange” (John Corbett), and “characteristically curious” (Marc Weidenbaum), activates sound in unconventional, temporary, and ephemeral ways using appropriation and remix as a critical practice. His solo and collaborative projects, installations, and public performances often investigate the mundane sonic nuances of everyday electronic devices. He has performed and exhibited widely across the United States, and at international venues and festivals such as the New Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, Moogfest, The Kitchen, CTM Festival for Adventurous Music (Germany), Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Kino Šiška (Slovenia), ORF RadioKulturhaus (Austria), Radio Revolten, International Radio Art Festival (Germany), LAK Festival of Nordic Sound Art (Denmark), among others. Selina Trepp

July 28-August 3

Selina Trepp is an artist researching economy and improvisation. Finding a balance between the intuitive and conceptual is a goal, living a life of adventure is a way, and embarrassment often the result. She works across media, combining performance, installation, painting, and sculpture to create intricate setups that result in photos, drawings and animations. Her art has been exhibited internationally and has received several awards and honors including the Swiss Art Award and the Illinois Arts council Fellowship. In addition to her studio-based work, Selina is active in the experimental music scene. In this context she sings and plays the videolah, her midi controlled video synthesizer, to create projected animations in real-time as visual music. She performs with a varying cast of collaborators and as one half of Spectralina, her collaboration with Dan Bitney.

Faheem Majeed

Faheem Majeed

Faheem Majeed

June 23-29

Faheem Majeed is a builder—literally and metaphorically. A resident of the South Shore neighborhood in Chicago, Majeed often looks to the material makeup of his neighborhood and surrounding areas as an entry point into larger questions around civic-mindedness, community activism, and institutional critique. As part of his studio practice, the artist transforms materials such as particle board, scrap metal and wood, and discarded signs and billboard remnants, breathing new life into these often overlooked and devalued materials. His broader engagement with the arts also involves arts administration, curation, and community facilitation, all of which feed into his larger practicece. Majeed received his BFA from Howard University and his MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant 2015 and a Harpo Foundation Awardee 2016. From 2005-2011, Majeed served as Executive Director and Curator for the South Side Community Art Center (SSCAC) and from 2013–2015 he served as the Associate Director and faculty of UIC’s School of Art and Art History. In 2015, he co-founded the “Floating Museum” which blends creative place-making, activism and exhibition design to create temporary, site-responsive museum spaces to activate sites of cultural potential throughout Chicago’s neighborhoods. Currently, Majeed is a full-time, practicing artist and creates work in his South Shore studio.
